Important notes:
Just getting to Taif is a thrill. Visitors travel along a winding road through the mountains — passing fruit markets, rose farms and deep valleys along the way — before reaching the plateau upon which sits Taif. Often referred to as the City of Roses, Taif is known for the famously fragrant flowers that grow in the surrounding wadis and mountains. It’s also known as Saudi’s unofficial summer capital. Because of its altitude, Taif is a cool escape from the heat. And while the roses bloom in April, the city really blossoms in August, when the Souq Okaz cultural festival and the Crown Prince Camel Festival are in full swing.
Taif > Al Baha OW
A journey to Al Baha is a trip to a different Saudi. In a country that’s often characterized by ochre desert, this high-altitude city in the Hijaz region is a place of storied towers, lush forests and winding valleys. Sitting 2,500 meters above sea level, the city enjoys moderate temperatures and is an ideal place to hike, picnic or camp. The ancient Ghamid and Zahran tribes forged a unique cultural identity in the area, building 1,001 stone Qasbah lookout towers that are only found here, as well as setting up a bustling souq. Drive out of the city around winding mountain bends and past apricot and pomegranate orchards to discover more than 40 forests surrounding the city. The road to the famous marble village of Dhee Ayn, which takes you through Tolkienesque valleys and past ruined towers, is almost as spectacular as the site itself.
Al Baha > Abha OW
Located at the southern end of the Red Sea coast, Abha is the culturally rich capital of the Aseer region and a great base for exploring this mountainous part of Arabia. The city has a wealth of delights to discover, from the mud-walled Shada Palace, now a museum, to Abha Dam Lake and the Abha Palace Theme Park. Shop in vibrant traditional markets in Abha and its sister city, Khamis Mushait. Then, roam historic neighborhoods like Al Nasb and Al Basta. Whether exploring the Al Muftaha art village or learning about tribal customs in the nearby villages of Al Habala and Rijal Almaa, Abha is the place to be immersed in the unique culture of the Aseer region.
Abha > Jizan OW
Stretching more than 200 kilometers along the tip of Saudi’s Red Sea coast, Jazan has all the prerequisites for a memorable holiday. From December through March, the weather is drier and more moderate, making winter an excellent time to explore this small province’s wealth of culture and nature. Discover Jazan’s diverse landscapes, including alabaster beaches, azure seas, green forests and craggy mountain peaks. The port city is perhaps best known as a jumping-off point for the unspoiled Farasan Islands, a protected archipelago of islands and coral islets that is not only home to an abundance of wildlife and colorful marine creatures but also a haven for those keen to explore Saudi’s heritage and diverse geography. From the ancient palm-roofed fort that overlooks the town to the merchant houses and evocative stone buildings of Al Qassar Village, Jazan’s appeal is as varied as its scenery.
