AlUla is 110 kilometers (68 miles) southwest of Tayma and 300 kilometers (190 miles) north of Medina. The city itself covers an area of 2,391 square kilometers (923 square miles) and has a population of 5,426. AlUla was once the capital of the ancient Lihyanites (Dedanites). The governorate is home to the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia, known as Hegra (also referred to as Al-Hijr, or Mada'in Saleh / Mada'in Salih), which is 22 kilometers (14 miles) north of the city.
