The inhabitants of Najran, known as Najranis, are predominantly Muslims, with Shia and Ismaili being the majority sects. Hanbali, Shafi'i, and Maliki Sunnis make up the second largest religious group in the city, while the Zaydi Shia are the smallest. The Arabic term "Najrān" has dual meanings: it can refer to the wooden frame on which a door swings open, and it also means 'thirsty'. According to local lore, the area got its name from the first man to settle there, Najran ibn Zaydan ibn Saba ibn Yahjub ibn Yarub ibn Qahtan.
