Najran is a city located in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia, close to the Yemen border. It serves as the capital of the Najran Province. Recognized as a newly established city, Najran is among the rapidly expanding cities in the country. Its population has surged from 47,500 in 1974 and 90,983 in 1992 to 246,880 in 2004 and 505,652 in 2017. The majority of the population descends from the ancient tribes of Yām, Mákram, and Hamdan. The inhabitants of Najran, known as Najranis, are predominantly Muslims, with Shia and Ismaili being the majority sects. Hanbali, Shafi'i, and Maliki Sunnis make up the second largest religious group in the city, while the Zaydi Shia are the smallest. The Arabic term "Najrān" has dual meanings: it can refer to the wooden frame on which a door swings open, and it also means 'thirsty'. According to local lore, the area got its name from the first man to settle there, Najran ibn Zaydan ibn Saba ibn Yahjub ibn Yarub ibn Qahtan. Historically, Najran was the Yemeni hub for cloth production, and it was here that the kiswah, or the cloth of the Ka'aba, was originally made (the tradition of clothing the Kaba was initiated by the Yemeni kings of Saba). There was once a Jewish community in Najran, known for their garment production. As per Yemenite Jewish tradition, the Jews of Najran claimed their lineage from the Ten Tribes. Najran also served as a significant stop on the Incense Route.
